Moving Schools in Hong Kong: A Guide for Mid-Year Transfers and New Arrivals

A school move often starts with a deadline you did not choose: a new job, a lease ending, or a child who needs a different setting. You can make the first calls before you know every answer.

A mid-year school place is different from a Primary One or Secondary One application. You need a vacancy in one class, at one school, in the year your child needs. That detail guides the whole search.

Start with the right call

Parents can contact a school directly to ask about admission. Families can also approach the Education Bureau for placement assistance where it applies. The EDB's placement-assistance FAQ explains both routes for children who need a place after the school year has started.

Start here

Contact the school directly

Ask the admissions office about a place in the specific year group your child needs.

If you need a route

Education Bureau placement assistance

The EDB offers placement assistance where it applies, after the school year has started.

Do not wait for a directory to show a vacancy. School registers list schools; the school itself knows whether a seat exists in the relevant year group.

Contact schools directly

Write a short message with your child's age, current year group, language background, expected start date and your contact details. Ask whether the school accepts applications for that year group and which documents it needs.

A useful first message

“We are moving to Hong Kong in January. Our child is eight and currently in Year 4. Does your school accept applications for that year group? Please send the current application steps, fee schedule and document list.”

Send the same core facts to each school, then tailor the note with one reason the school could suit your child. Keep the tone factual. Staff need enough information to route your enquiry to the right person.

Prepare your documents

Schools set their own lists. Most families save time by gathering the material below before applications open.

Keep readyWhy a school may ask
Identity and visa documentsTo verify the child's identity and right to study in Hong Kong.
Address proofTo confirm contact details, transport options or an allocation route.
Latest school reportsTo understand year placement and learning needs.
Immunisation recordFor the school health record where requested.

Use copies for applications and keep the originals with you. A school can ask for translated records or further documents after it reads the first set.

Make a usable shortlist

Start with your child's stage, commute and teaching language. A list of ten schools across the city can look generous on paper and fail on a wet Tuesday morning.

Use the school finder to check district, school type, published fees and location. Then visit each school's own website for the application route.

Track each school in one sheet

Move each school down this line as it changes. One row per school keeps a mid-year search from becoming a stack of notes.

Ask about a specific year group. “Does your school have vacancies?” gives an admissions office too little to act on.

Ask on the visit

  • Which year group would the school place my child in, and why?
  • How does the school support a child arriving from another curriculum or language?
  • Who helps the child settle during the first weeks?
  • Which costs apply from the first day?
  • What happens if the school does not have a place now?

You will hear more than the answer. A family changing schools needs to picture the ordinary day.

Common questions

Can my child change schools during the Hong Kong school year?

Yes. Parents can contact schools direct to ask about vacancies and admission requirements. The Education Bureau also offers placement assistance in some circumstances.

Does an EDB school search show live vacancies?

No. The school register helps you identify schools. Contact the school to ask about a place in the year group your child needs.

What should a family moving to Hong Kong do first?

Start with the EDB placement-assistance information, then contact suitable schools. Keep identity, address, visa and school-record documents ready because each school can request different items.
